Industrial 4G router for reliable M2M communication

4G industrial mobile broadband router for reliable machine to machine communication in critical infrastructure systems

Critical infrastructure systems rely on communication devices to provide reliable and secure networks. To support this requirement Westermo has launched the MRD-455, a robust 4G router designed to provide resilient and secure high-speed remote access across mobile networks. Offering an industrial design and a broad range of connectivity features, the MRD-455 ensures reliable machine to machine communications anywhere in the world.

The MRD-455 is extremely well suited to industrial applications where reliable machine to machine communication is vital. It has a compact design with all interfaces and LEDs at the front, DIN-rail mounting, isolated power supply and an operating voltage range spanning from 10 VDC to 60 VDC. This industrial mobile broadband router offers a broad range of connectivity options, supporting many mobile standards including 4G/LTE, 3G, and GPRS. A GPS antenna port enables customers to track remote assets by location which can be helpful in order to reduce the time it takes to locate equipment in an area.

The unit has a built-in two port 10/100 Ethernet switch and RS-232 D-Sub, which allows devices to seamlessly connect over vast geographical distances. Status changes to the device can be received by SMS, allowing industrial applications to be managed, controlled and updated from across the globe. This eliminates the need for time consuming and costly site visits.

The MRD-455 offers Virtual Private Network (VPN) functionality, enabling secure tunnels to be created over insecure networks, such as the Internet. Dual SIM support ensures that connectivity is not dependent on a single carrier. Should a problem occur the MRD-455 switches to the other SIM. The MRD-455 also features a powerful inspection firewall which, together with the VPNs and dual SIM support, assures a secure network.

Creative Westermo employee wins scholarship

Continuous improvements are important at Westermo and every employee is encouraged to contribute to this initiative. Dedication, drive and creativity are key components in making advancements and a creative contribution from Andreas Andersson has enhanced Westermo’s production process and won a scholarship from the Brita and Otto Larsson's Memorial Foundation.

At the Eskilstuna Factory Association´s annual members meeting held in April, four employees from factories in the Sodermanland region were awarded scholarships from the Brita and Otto Larsson's Memorial Foundation. The scholarships are given to individuals who have contributed in a creative way to improving processes at their companies.

Andreas Andersson from Westermo was one of the employees to be awarded with a scholarship. Andreas has been working in the production department, primarily as an Automated Optical Inspection operator, since 2008. Andreas also studies software development and this helped him to identify an opportunity to improve some of the processes involved in his daily work.

It all started when Andreas suggested that a manual task could be digitised. Andreas explains: “Previously it was very difficult to handle the large amount of handwritten production reports created on a daily basis to provide an overview of current production status. Every report is important and must be carefully processed, making it a very time consuming process.”

“I have experience of software development and I took the initiative to develop a program that could overcome this issue,” continued Andreas. “And I presented my idea during one of our continuous improvement meetings.”

The program Andreas developed is a user friendly tool that removes all handwritten documentation. The program helps Westermo operators to check different parameters in the production process and contributes to ensuring high product quality.

“Westermo values the dedication and drive that Andreas has demonstrated,” said Kari Parkkila, VP production, Westermo. “The initiative is a great example of how working towards continuous improvement drives a company’s development.”
