Success at Rail2015

Westermo exhibited at Rail2015 on the 16th & 17th of September at Long Marston. The event was a great success with many guests visiting the Westermo Mobile Training and Technology Centre (MTTC) which was on site for the duration of the event. Westermo also showed how its range of train network viper switches can be used to communicate on board some London Underground rolling stock that was on site.

Westermo RedFox industrial routing switch certified for hazardous area applications

Westermo announces that the high-performance RedFox industrial Ethernet switch range is now fully certified for use in hazardous areas. ATEX/IECEx certification by BASEEFA enables these robust Layer 3 switches to be installed in potentially explosive atmospheres typically found in oil and chemical processing plants, sewage treatment and gas distribution centres, sugar refineries and grain handling locations.

In addition to obtaining EX-certification, RedFox has been tested both by Westermo and external test houses to meet many EMC, isolation, vibration and shock standards, all to the highest levels suitable for heavy industrial environments and even rail trackside applications.

RedFox is a key component within Westermo’s Edge Network Solutions, which transfer vital data from the edge of data networks where environmental conditions are harsh, back to the core of companies’ business systems. By combining Westermo’s WeOS network operating software and network tools, with RedFox and other industrial networking hardware, Westermo is able to provide resilient and robust solutions for any mission critical network.

RedFox is powered by the WeOS, which is now available for 70 different products within the Westermo range. WeOS has been developed to allow cross-platform and future proof solutions. WeOS can deliver unique IP security functionality for this class of product, whilst secure remote access to a network can be provided using encrypted VPNs.

As a Layer 3 routing switch RedFox delivers enterprise type routing functionality, utilising industry-standard protocols such as OSPF, RIP and VRRP. Should a failure occur within a ring network, Westermo’s FRNT protocol rapidly reconfigures (around 20ms) the network to ensure the process can continue. This helps to minimise any disruption to operations and ensure resilient networks can be constructed.

RedFox has a wide power range of 19-60VDC on dual power inputs for resilience, and requires 30 per cent less power than the previous generation of products, a significant benefit for lifetime running costs. RedFox has a wide operating temperature range of -40 to +70°C (-40 to +158°F) making it suitable for extreme environmental conditions and because it has no moving parts or cooling holes in the aluminium enclosure this maximises the reliability of the product, providing an exceptional mean time between failure of up to 388,000 hours for ATEX/IECEx approved models.

Westermo to demonstrate resilient data communications at RAIL2015

Westermo will bring its innovative and robust industrial data communications products alive at the RAIL2015 exhibition later this month. The company will have its Mobile Training and Technology Centre (MTTC) at the two-day event, enabling the company to demonstrate its resilient networking solutions for both trackside and on-board rolling stock applications.

RAIL2015 takes place on 16th-17th September at the Quinton Rail Technology Centre in Warwickshire. It is the largest event of its kind in the UK and is held against the backdrop of a real rail environment with the goal of showcasing and encouraging innovation and development.Westermo’s industrial networking experts will be on hand to provide advice on designing and installing mission critical data communication networks that can operate in the harsh environments found trackside and meet the tough demands of on-board rolling stock installation.

“With its emphasis on innovation and practical excellence, RAIL2015 is the ideal opportunity for Westermo to demonstrate our resilient Ethernet networking solutionsfor rail applications,” said Alan Bollard, Managing Director of Westermo Data Communications Ltd. “The MTTC allows us to present the latest data communications technologies directly to systems engineers and outline how they can be used to meet the networking challenges they are currently facing.”

There will be live demonstrations of Westermo’s RedFox, Lynx, Wolverine and Viper range of Ethernet devices, many of which are Network Rail approved. These extremely robust devices have been developed to function in the harshest environments and meet the toughest approval specifications including those for rail applications. Using the Westermo WeOS operating software they can provide reliable, future proof solutions in such data communication areas as IP networks and Ethernet systems.

Visitors to the MTTC will not only be able see the latest Westermo technology, but also be able to discuss how they have been applied within recent rail projects including the extensive Ethernet and IP upgrades for power use and cooling on the London Underground, train movement management from Cardiff Central Station, and key Ethernet component provision for the European Raid Traffic Management System.

The Westermo 2015 Roadshow will visit nine locations. Find a location and date to suit you and register today!
