Minimize traffic load

Did you know that IGMP snooping all proxy mode will help keep the traffic load to a minimum in Multicast applications?

Setting all WeOS switches in your LAN to IGMP proxy mode, Multicast streams will only be forwarded when there is a subscriber present.

If no subscriber wants to receive the stream, it is blocked in the first switch where the sender is connected, keeping the network load to a minimum. IGMP proxy mode combined with IGMP fast leave is perfect for bandwidth hungry applications like IP-camera networks or FRNT ring networks over SHDSL, which have limited bandwidth available.

Normally there is a designated IGMP Querier elected among all switches or routers within the LAN. All Multicast streams are forwarded to the designated Querier, irrespective if there is any subscriber present or not. This generates a heavy traffic load on the links leading to the designated Querier. By configuring all switches and routers as IGMP proxy Queriers, no designated IGMP Querier is elected. Therefore Multicast traffic will only be transmitted on the links leading to present subscribers, keeping the network load to a minimum.
