Westermo, a leader in industrial data communication, proudly announces the launch of its first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). This underscores the company's commitment to sustainability, transparency, and providing customers with the information they need to make informed decisions.
The Viper-112A is a managed switch optimized for the needs of the railway rolling stock market. The main function of the product is to transfer digital information on board trains in applications such as control systems, doors and engines, speaker systems, Wi-Fi and internet on board.
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) provides quantifiable environmental data on the life cycle of a product. It is based on an independently verified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and follows international standards, including ISO 14025. The EPD covers various environmental impacts, such as carbon footprint, use of energy and other resources, offering a comprehensive overview of a product's environmental performance.
“We have made significant progress in our circularity journey,” says Jenny Sjödahl, CEO of Westermo. “By being transparent about the environmental footprint of our products, we aim to help our customers achieve their sustainability ambitions and make informed decisions when choosing products and solutions for their networks.”
Westermo's offering is long-lasting, energy-efficient, and high-quality products that enable secure and reliable network solutions. The Westermo products are in many cases designed to last at least 20 years.
"Sustainable product development involves not only minimizing environmental impact, but also optimizing the product and offer from a sustainability viewpoint" says Anders Hanberg, Product manager at Westermo. "By prioritizing robust design, low power consumption and sustainable materials, we ensure that our solutions are reliable and long-lasting, supporting the transition to a circular economy."
The Viper-112A switch is designed and tested to withstand constant vibration, extreme temperatures, humidity and a demanding electrical environment on-board train. The Viper-112A has passed the rigorous EN 50155 and EN 50121-4 tests, proving its high operational performance. Through the EPD, Westermo can now expand its product documentation to include the dimension of environmental performance as well.
"The EPD shows that the climate impact of the Viper-112A, from a lifecycle perspective, comes mainly from electricity consumption during the use phase” says Anders. “While the use phase has the most significant climate impact, we continuously work to make our products and solutions more sustainable from a broader perspective. This work includes conscious decision-making on everything from product development and material selection to dialogues with suppliers and rigorous quality assurance processes – all in close collaboration with our customers.”
