Private cellular networks are a great choice for organisations looking for secure, reliable communication systems that offer a high degree of control.
These networks can be categorised into three distinct levels, each offering varying degrees of resilience and control. As you progress through these levels, the network's robustness and cybersecurity improve, but this also demands more meticulous planning and resources.
Regardless of which level of private network suits your needs, Westermo has the expertise and technology to support you every step of the way.
At the foundational level, a basic private network provides essential connectivity and control. This level typically involves using existing public infrastructure with added security measures such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and firewalls. While this setup offers a degree of privacy and control, it is still reliant on public networks, which can be susceptible to outages and cyber threats. The primary advantage of this level is its cost-effectiveness and ease of implementation, making it suitable for smaller organisations or those driving digital transformation in resource constrained environments.
The second level introduces more advanced features and greater control over the network infrastructure. The network uses existing public infrastructure but is isolated from the main internet, accessible only to those with approved SIM cards. This includes deploying private cellular networks on specific spectrums, such as 450 MHz, which offers extensive coverage over large, remote areas, even in challenging environments.
Using eUICC SIMs can significantly enhance the flexibility and reliability of the network. eUICC SIM cards allow for remote provisioning and management over-the-air (OTA), reducing the need for physical interaction and logistics. This capability enables organisations to switch between providers, select the best MNO and tariff plans, and change them as needed, ensuring optimal performance and cost-efficiency. The use of eUICC SIMs also supports a mix of MNOs to ensure the IoT gateway uses the one with the best local coverage, further enhancing network resilience.
Enhanced private networks are ideal for medium to large organisations that require higher reliability and security.
The final level of private network resilience and control involves building a fully owned and operated network infrastructure. This includes implementing a dedicated Radio Access Network (RAN) with battery backup and fail-safe mechanisms. Organisations at this level have complete control over their network, from coverage and performance to access and security.
This setup significantly reduces the risk of cyber attacks and ensures uninterrupted service even during power outages or other disruptions. A Private RAN provides a significant degree of isolation from public networks. However, it is recommended to always use a VPN to secure traffic, even when operating over a private network. A private network is ideal for critical infrastructure in remote areas where consistent connectivity is challenging and interruptions can impact revenue, costs, brand, and reputation.
The three levels of private network resilience and control offer organisations a range of options to meet their specific needs. From basic setups that leverage public infrastructure to fully owned and operated networks, each level provides increasing degrees of security, reliability, and control. By carefully assessing their requirements and resources, organisations can choose the appropriate level to ensure their network remains robust and secure.
