Westermo Network Technology is now certified by the Wireless Broadband Alliance for OpenRoaming™. The capability was tested during the PlugFest at the Wireless Global Congress (WGC APAC) held in Bangkok, Thailand from the 22nd to 23rd January 2025.

This certification enables Westermo Wi-Fi access points to leverage OpenRoaming, hence allowing Wi-Fi users to roam seamlessly and securely between different Wi-Fi networks located all over the world where there is an existing partnership. OpenRoaming provides users with a “connect once, connect everywhere” experience. It partners with identity providers to authenticate users using their existing credentials and uses WPA2/3 encryption standards to ensure the secure transmission of data.  

OpenRoaming is built on top of Passpoint technology. The federation enables a one-to-many relationship between different access networks and identity providers. This helps in scaling roaming capabilities much faster than scaling one-to-one partnerships. This new feature will be released in the next firmware update.   

OpenRoaming federation consists of three layers:

1. Network automation layer: This layer enables an automatic and secure match between a client and a Wi-Fi network. It is done by configuring the Wi-Fi network with roaming consortium codes (RCOI). 

2. Cloud federation layer: This layer discovers an authentication server (AAA) behind a given credential using Dynamic Peer Discovery. 

3. Cybersecurity layer: The RadSec protocol is used for the secure transmission of authentication, authorization and accounting messages between servers. OpenRoaming is widely deployed across the world. OpenRoaming maps from WBA alliance show the current status of deployments.
