Scalable wired and wireless network with legacy support
Scalable wired and wireless network with legacy support

Transformers, rectifiers, switchgear, and circuit breakers are all necessary components of the main traction substation for reliable and safe railway electrification. Even when there is no wired network infrastructure in place, these components must be able to communicate with the central control system in order to provide vital telemetry and remote control.

In railroad electrification, there is a mix of older equipment and newer solutions because railways have been around in many countries for a very long time and have seen many changes over the years. The challenge is to build a network communication infrastructure that is both scalable for future needs as well as incorporating the old legacy systems that still are present and will continue to exist.

  • EN 50121-4 approved
  • IEC-61850-3 approved

Westermo carries a wide range of trackside EN 50121-4 approved products as well as Substation Automation approvals according to IEC-61850-3 when required. Wireless remote access with the Merlin product family can be secured using VPN technology and Firewalls to protect the integrity of the communication link. These also come with extensive SCADA protocol conversion capabilities.
